After I left the safety of Teldrassil some years ago, the first place I visited was just Darkshore, maybe because of the small distance from Rut'theran Village where the Teldrassil Hippogryph Master is located.
During the years since my first visit I have occasionally come back to see how it fares with my old friends that still live here. Many people often tell me that they find the place depressing, mostly due to the darkness and rain and the fact that the sun never seems to shine over this place. I, on the other hand find this place very interesting and fascinating. Sadly, the corruption from Felwood has slowly begun taking control of Darkshore as well.
Auberdine
Auberdine is the main town of Darkshore. It has a heavily trafficked harbour where one can take a ship to Stormwind Harbour, Rut'theran Village that is the Darnassus harbour and Azuremyst Isle. The town ruled by the Night Elves and the architecture is in the same style as most other Night Elf settlements. The inn in Auberdine is extremely friendly towards travellers, stay a night or two and inhale the atmosphere of Darkshore.
Ruins of Mathystra and the Tower of Althalaxx
The Ruins of Mathystra, now overrun with naga used to be a Night Elven city. But that was long ago, before the Great Sundering when the Well of Eternity was destroyed. The ruins are filled with old figurines and relics from the time when the Highborne lived there. Well, in a way of speaking the Highborne still live there in the form of naga.
Ameth’Aran and Bashal’Aran
Ameth’Aran and Bashal’Aran are thought to be the remains of two cities that belonged to the Highborne. Today Ameth’Aran is populated by the ghosts of the long dead Highborne Elves, that were the upper class of the old elven civilization. The ‘lower’ class were the Night Elves. Back then the common name for the elves was Kaldorei meaning literally Children of the Stars. During the War of the Ancients, the highborne were split into two groups. One of the groups took the side of the demons, that turned out to be a fatal mistake as it was the loosing side of the war, and a smaller group took the side of the Night Elves. They who sided with the demons were cursed at the end of the war and became the Naga while the Highborne that sided with us Night Elves later turned into High Elves. Remember that the current blood elves are descendants of the High Elves and in my humble opinion it seems that they continue their spree of bad choices.
Bashal’Aran is today the home of demons in the form of satyrs and sprites.
Grove of the Ancients
The Grove of the Ancients is located in southern Darkshore, close to the Wildbend River and is a place that must be visited if you have any interest at all in the history of Azeroth. The Ancient of Lore, Onu resides here at the moment together with some vendors but it is said that the groove is the place where the Circle of Ancients meet.
Onu is interested in the Master’s Glaive and Mathystra, but I am sure that he can tell you a story of pretty much anything you want to know more about as he is after all the Ancient of Lore and has seen many things during the years. Ancients are known to live quite long, even thousands of years so show him a little respect when you visit him.
The Master’s Glaive
The Master’s Glaive is a gigantic skull half buried in the ground south of the Grove of Ancients. What is interesting about the skull is that it seems to have a huge glaive buried into it. My people, the Night Elves, have considered this a sacred place and I would love to do some more research here but it is currently overrun with members of the Twillight’s Hammer. While scouting the place for Onu some time ago he referred to the skull as an Old Lord but I am not sure exactly what he meant by it. Could it be that the skull belonged to one of the Old Gods?
Remtravel’s Excavation
What would the world be without the Explorer’s League? They have their representatives all around the world and you guessed right, also in Darkshore. Prospector Remtravel has a excavation site in the souther Darkshore not far from the Master’s Glaive. He is quite absent minded and has not really noticed that his whole dig site has been overrun with golems. So if you happen to stumble across his dig site, be sure to help him as I am sure that the golems have returned since I last visited him.
