This time in Unforgotten Places we will visit Durotar, the home of both the Orcs and Trolls of the Horde. The land is surrounded by the sea on two sides and the only border that can be traversed is towards the Barrens in the west as the mountains in the north protect against the harsh lands of Azshara. It is possible to swim from Ratchet to Sen’Jin Village.
Both the Orcs and Trolls came to Durotar under the lead of Warchief Thrall, the country is named after his father Durotan. This happened when the Orcs were looking for a new place to settle down after they left the Eastern Kingdoms. The trolls first settled down on the Echo Isles just outside of the south eastern coast until they where forced to move by the Kul Tiras fleet.
Valley of Trials
Sen’Jin Village The Sen’Jin Village is the main troll settlement in Durotar. It was here that the trolls moved after they where driven away from the Echo Isles just outside the coastline. After scouting the village for a while I’ve come to the conclusion that the trolls are quite proud members of the Horde and they really like their Raptor mounts as the commerce seemed to be quite good.
Echo Isles The original settlement of the trolls after they joined the Horde. They were forced to move from these isles by the Kul Tiras fleet by Jaina Proudmoores father who did not like the idea of orcs and humans co-existing.
Tiragarde Keep What is left of the Kul Tiras fleet that drove the trolls from their homes built a fortress north of Sen’Jin Village and south east of Razor Hill. The people living here are working hard to make their old leaders will true. In other words, they try to sabotage for the Horde in any way possible.
Razor Hill The main settlement in Durotar is called Razor Hill. It is located in the middle of the country and is quite heavily trafficked. There are profession and class trainers here as well as many missions for the young hoard members that have passed the rites in the Valley of Trials.
Drygulch Ravine A ravine located between Razor Hill and Orgrimmar. Populated mostly by harpies that are trying to ambush the various travelers between the capital and Razor Hill. Many attempts have been made by Razor Hill to get rid of this threat but the harpies seem to disappear into the ravines and caves and they have not yet been exterminated.
Orgrimmar
Orgrimmar, the capital of the proud Orcs and one of the more visited capitals of the Horde. Just outside the city, east of the path to Razor Hill is a tower for airships to the Eastern Kingdoms and probably Northrend as well, but that I am not certain of, the Northrend airship could dock inside the city as well.
Razormane Grounds
Southfury River The Southfury river is the natural border between Durotar and the Barrens. I do not recommend a swim in the river as it is crawling with Crocolisks.
As I was scouting out the farm at the Veiled Sea I decided to continue to Tanaris. This lead me to Land’s End Beach and from there I saw some islands in the south. The legendary South Sea Islands. As I have never visited them before I decided to take the detour.
From the southern tip of Land’s End Beach start swimming east. until you see a formation in the seabed as shown in the following picture:
Swim as far out on the ledge without hitting the deeper waters and take a final deep breath, you will need it. When you feel that you are ready, start swimming southward, and it is important that you do swim directly towards south. Any deviation in direction will lead to a drowning accident. It must also be noted that you will not survive the swim without any speed boosts. As a druid I’m lucky enough to have an aquatic form but there are ways for other classes as well. Like the fishing pole that turns you into a fish, or swim speed elixirs etc.
When you hit shallow waters again, luckily unharmed, you will have reached the South Sea Islands. Enjoy your stay but remember that it is just as long swim back.
The northern island is the first one you will see, it contains some goblin laboratories and its population consists mostly of sand, give or take a pirate or two.
There is a goblin style oil rig located between the northern and southern island. The oil rig seems to be active but I did not find any workers around it. Maybe it is run by the pirates that live on the islands.
The southern island is where the bigger part of the pirates reside, it seems like they only take turns guarding the northern island. Here you will be able to find a few huts and a water tower as well. Does it surprise anyone that the huts are in goblin style here as well? It seems to me that these islands were once inhabited by goblins. Maybe this was once one of their outposts, the rumor does say that their main islands are located somewhere in the South Sea so I do not find the idea all too far fetched.
There is a farm in the Veiled Sea!
Ok, ok.. From the beginning. While in Dalaran I usually meet a lot of travelers and I try to engage them in conversations. The other night I met this fellow fisherman and he told me about the catches that he had made along the shoreline of Silithus. I tried to point out that Silithus did not have any shoreline but the fellow insisted that it had, just that it was not reachable from Silithus. The key here was that you have to swim from either Feralas or Tanaris, but he promised that the catches were worth the effort.
So, as a new owner of a Sea Turtle, I thought that I would take her out for a swim and I set off to Feralas. From there me and my turtle swam south towards Silithus and I must say that the man was right. The amount of Nightfin Snappers, Summer Bass and Salmon that I have hooked.. Not to mention Lightning Eel.
We continued to ride southward and when the shoreline started to show a tendency of shifting eastwards at the southern point of Kalimdor, that was when I first saw the windmill. Tensing a little, as it looked like a Tauren one, we continued towards it and soon a ‘farmtent’ came into view, also that in Tauren style. But after a while of sneaking around I figured that there was no one around even though there was a fire burning in one of the tents. I spent some time in and around the farm but I couldn’t find anything useful and no tracks of the owners.
A little bit to the east from the farm is an entrance to a cave, but that was empty as well. I tried prowling around the place but the only thing I could find was some old bones.
Todays journey goes to Wetlands. I decided to do the report myself this time. From Menethil Harbor to Grim Batol. I do hope that you will enjoy this : )
The Loch Modan area is a place that links Dun Morogh together with both the Badlands and Wetlands. This Dwarven controlled area is a little more tempered then their home country, mostly because it is located on a lower altitude in the mountains.
One of the wonders of Azeroth, the Stonewrough Dam, is located here or more precisely on the border between Loch Modan and the Wetlands. More of the dam later in this article.
Located along the road between the South and North pass into Dun Morogh. This is a typical Dwarven settlement with a flight master, and a tavern. You can also find trainers for some professions here, like Journeyman Alchemist, Mining, Herbalism and fishing. While the fishing trainer is located north east of the town, the others are inside the small town and easy to find.
This Kobold infested mine is located between the North gate and Thelsamar. As this mine once was one of the main supplies of Silver for Ironforge, one can begin to wonder how come they ignore the new residents.
Stonewrough Dam One of the wonders of Azeroth, the Stonewrough Dam, was once built by the Dwarves and it nicely dams up Loch Modan and thus uncovering most of Wetlands to a swamp instead of sea bed. Even though this is good for business in Wetlands, the water still needs to go somewhere and the dam has grown Loch Modan to around twice of its original size.
The Dark Iron dwarves try to sabotage the dam from time to time, and their raids have constantly increased during the last few years. So far, the Ironforge dwarves together with adventurers have successfully repelled all of the attacks but the threat level is fairly high for this place.
The Dam also is the home for an Engineering Trainer.
Mo’grosh Stronghold Home of the Mo’grosh ogres in the north eastern parts of Loch Modan. This is a barren place containing a lot for burnt vegetation. The caves in this area holds most of the different varieties of these ogre’s.
The Farstrider Lodge
The Farstrider Lodge is a hunting lodge in the south eastern parts of the region, in the hills above Ironband's Excavation site. There are some hunting challenges available here with nice rewards for hunters and some even for other adventurers. The challenges are time based and involves tracking and hunting beasts that live in the hills and on the eastern shore of the lake. I did enjoy these challenges as they involve sneaking around other beasts to get to the targets.
The lodge also hosts a leather armor merchant who from time to time has green items in stock.
Valley of Kings The first time that I travelled to this valley was when i needed to get to the Searing Gorge in a hurry. I had heard of a tunnel that could be used and the entrance to that tunnel was located in the Valley of Kings in Loch Modan.
Even though I was unable to use the tunnel at that time due to the fact that it was locked and the gate keeper, Mountaineer Pebblebitty, didn't trust me to survive on the other side, the visit to the valley was worth the detour.
The beautiful nature and the fantastic statues of old kings.I've later come back to the gate keeper with proof that I can handle the things that lie on the other side of the tunnel and thus I am now a proud owner of the key to the tunnel between Loch Modan and the Searing Gorge. The tunnel is in reality of no use these days due to the flight point in the gorge but it is a nice memory and a nice way to reach the gorge if travelling over land.
